As the world prepares to mark the United Nations International Day of Peace on September 21, Christian and Muslim leaders in Kaduna have intensified interfaith efforts aimed at fostering unity and tolerance.
Pastor (Dr.) Yohanna Buru, General Overseer of Christ Evangelical and Life Intervention Ministry, received a delegation of Muslim scholars at his church as part of the peace-building exchanges. He expressed joy at the visit, emphasizing the importance of this year’s theme, “Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals.” According to him, true peace can only be achieved through collective action to advance justice, reduce poverty, close inequality gaps, and resolve conflicts.
Recalling his own past visits to mosques and Muslim communities, Pastor Buru stressed that such engagements have deepened understanding and respect between Christians and Muslims. He appealed to the youth in Kaduna to reject hate speech, especially on social media, and instead embrace dialogue and cooperation. He also urged citizens to register and prepare to vote in the 2027 elections, noting that good leadership is critical to sustaining peace.
Speaking on behalf of the Muslim scholars, Ambassador Dr. Idris Musa of the Northern Nigeria Elders Network for Peace praised Pastor Buru’s long-standing role in promoting interfaith dialogue. He explained that the visit was part of this year’s Peace Day activities, which prioritize community-based interactions that strengthen peaceful coexistence.
Dr. Musa further commended the Pastor for consistently joining Muslims during Maulud and Eid celebrations, describing him as a living example of practical peacebuilding.
The International Day of Peace, declared by the United Nations in 2001, is observed annually on September 21. It is dedicated to promoting non-violence and global solidarity, encouraging nations and communities alike to foster dialogue and unity.
