Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has commended the humanitarian initiatives of the Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA), describing its efforts in supporting widows and children of Nigeria’s fallen heroes as a noble service to humanity. He pledged his administration’s full backing for the programme.
The governor gave the commendation when he received the Wife of the Chief of Defence Staff and President of DEPOWA, Oghogho Musa, and her delegation at Government House, Asaba. He expressed delight at the choice of Delta State as the venue for the DEPOWA empowerment seminar for widows drawn from Delta, Edo, Anambra and Enugu States.
Oborevwori recalled that only a month earlier, his administration had empowered 10,000 widows across Delta through skills training, financial grants to help them establish small-scale businesses, and free access to medical services, stressing that his government will continue to prioritise vulnerable groups in society.
In her remarks, Mrs. Oghogho Musa, who hails from Delta, explained that DEPOWA is a coalition of the Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association, the Naval Officers Wives Association, the Nigerian Air Force Officers Wives Association and the Police Officers Wives Association. She said the body, which was initially created to support officers’ families while their spouses served on national duty, has since grown into a platform for humanitarian and development programmes targeted at widows and orphans of fallen heroes.
She also used the occasion to brief the governor on the DEPOWA Future Leadership Academy in Abuja, which is slated for commissioning in September 2026. The academy, she said, will provide automatic scholarships for children of fallen heroes, serving as a lasting tribute to the sacrifices of their parents.
