In a decisive move to tackle the recurring cholera outbreaks in Bauchi State, the Deputy Governor, Auwal Jatau, has inaugurated the Cholera Steering and Technical Committee in collaboration with WaterAid Nigeria. The initiative comes on the heels of disturbing reports confirming 58 deaths and 258 new cases across 14 out of the 20 local government areas in the state.

The inauguration, held in Bauchi, brought together key development partners including the World Health Organisation, WaterAid Nigeria, traditional institutions and religious leaders. The organisations voiced serious concern over the rising number of cases and stressed the need for stronger government commitment and resource allocation to contain the outbreak. They also pledged their continued support to Bauchi in strengthening preparedness and response to future public health emergencies.

Deputy Governor Jatau, who will chair the committee, charged members to demonstrate expertise and dedication, emphasising that early detection, rapid response and robust surveillance systems are critical to bringing the epidemic under control. He further underscored the importance of improving Water, Sanitation and Hygiene services, noting that the committee’s mandate is to coordinate a multi-sectoral response while implementing long-term prevention strategies in line with the National Cholera Control Plan.

Reassuring stakeholders, Jatau affirmed the commitment of the state government to provide the needed support and enabling environment for the effective discharge of the committee’s responsibilities, adding that no effort would be spared in safeguarding the health and wellbeing of citizens.
