Kogi State Government Condemns Violent Protest at CUSTECH

The Kogi State Government has condemned a violent protest at Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, where individuals claiming to represent the Association of People Living with Disabilities (PWDs) blocked the university’s main gate and disrupted academic activities.

The protesters alleged marginalization in employment opportunities at CUSTECH. However, Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, described the claims as “unfounded,” noting that the university has employed several qualified individuals with disabilities in both academic and non-academic roles. Examples include Rofiat Ozohu Ohize, Technologist II in the Chemistry Department; Ahmed Rufai Omuya, Assistant Executive Officer in the Registry; and Mustapha Obaje, Assistant Lecturer in the Technology Education Department.

Fanwo emphasized that recruitment at CUSTECH is merit-driven, with vacancies publicly advertised and open to all, including PWDs. “The application process focuses solely on qualifications, not disability status, ensuring no discrimination,” he said. While acknowledging the challenges faced by PWDs, Fanwo called their claims of exclusion baseless, stressing that academic recruitment prioritizes excellence.

The commissioner also raised concerns about the protest’s violent nature, use of sophisticated recording equipment, and extensive media coverage, suggesting possible political motives ahead of the 2027 elections.

The government commended CUSTECH management and students for their restraint during the incident and reaffirmed Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s commitment to inclusivity and fairness. Fanwo further called on the Police and security agencies to investigate the protest and prevent future disruptions, reiterating that politically motivated attacks on state institutions would not be tolerated.
