Emir of Gummi Urges Zamfara Government to Procure Modern Boats After Tragic Accidents

Published on 18 September 2025 at 14:43

The Emir of Gummi, retired Justice Lawal Hassan, has appealed to the Zamfara State Government to work with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to acquire modern boats capable of carrying 50 to 100 passengers, following recent tragic accidents in the state.

The appeal came during a condolence visit by Deputy Governor Mani Mummuni to the families of victims of a bus that plunged into the Gwalli River, as well as those affected by a boat mishap at Birnin Magaji Village in Gummi Local Government Area.

Deputy Governor Mummuni, leading a high-powered delegation under the Assessment and Support for Victims of Banditry and Natural Disaster Committee, mourned the nineteen wedding guests who died in the bus accident last Saturday. Eyewitnesses noted that the bridge over the Gwalli River had collapsed over six years ago, with reconstruction promised by the Governor Dauda Lawal administration.

The delegation also visited families of the twenty-one victims of the boat mishap, where N500,000 was announced for each affected family.

Emir Lawal Hassan emphasized that the current boat fleet is old and unsafe, urging the government to invest in modern vessels to prevent further tragedies. Deputy Governor Mummuni also pledged the deployment of additional troops with Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) to protect residents from bandits and ensure the resumption of safe economic activities.
