In what has been described as a historic intervention against water scarcity, Governor Caleb Mutfwang has officially flagged off the construction of a solar-powered motorized water treatment and supply system in Mado community, Tudun Wada, Jos North Local Government Area.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held with great excitement, brought together top government officials, technical partners, community leaders, and jubilant residents who have endured years of hardship due to lack of safe drinking water.
Speaking at the event, Governor Mutfwang, represented by the Commissioner for Water Resources and Energy, Hon. Bashir Datti Lawadi, highlighted the urgency of the project. He lamented the plight of residents who, during dry seasons, were forced to rely on unsafe water sources. He disclosed that the governor approved over ₦200 million for the project, describing it as a governance-driven initiative, not a political gesture.
“Gone are the days our women will go out at midnight to fetch water. Water is coming here from now till eternity,” Lawadi declared, urging the community to take ownership of the facility and protect it.
The governor’s Technical Adviser on Water Management, Dr. Jurbe Godep, described the project as a pilot scheme that had been months in planning, emphasizing the governor’s quick approval and support. He noted that contractors were thoroughly vetted, including internationally, to ensure quality.
The General Manager of PLAMWASSA, Geologist Jelkyes Dakat, echoed the significance of the project, calling it a milestone of trust between the government and the people.
On behalf of the implementing partner, Mr. Paul van der Vaart, MD of Verde Environmental Nigeria Ltd, assured the crowd of a facility built to the highest technical and environmental standards. Quoting an Irish proverb, he reminded all present: “Water is life.”
In their remarks, community leaders expressed heartfelt gratitude. The District Head of Tudun Wada, Ada Peter Nyam (JP), said the project proved that the people’s votes had not been in vain, while Mado Community Chairman, Mr. Ambrose Gurumwan, recalled the long years of hardship. He announced that five community members would work directly with the contractor to secure the facility.
The Women Leader, Mrs. Josephine Godwin Asoloko, gave an emotional testimony, recalling how women suffered by waking up at odd hours and trekking long distances to fetch water. With tears of joy, she hailed the project as a lifeline and legacy for Plateau women and families.
The event climaxed with the formal handing over of the project site to the contractor, marking the start of what many described as a new era for Tudun Wada.
