Peace Ambassadors in Anambra State have called on political parties, candidates, and their supporters to embrace peace ahead of the November 8 Governorship election. The appeal was made on September 20 during a peace march in Awka, held to commemorate the 2025 United Nations International Day of Peace.

The procession, which started at UNIZIK Junction and ended at Alex Ekwueme Square, attracted participants from various peace-focused organizations, including the Peace and Positive Living Awareness Center (UN-PEPOLAC), Rotary Clubs, the Anambra Peace and Mediation Working Commission, and the Institute for Peace, Security and Development Studies of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Chukwuemeka Jaja Nwanegbo, Director of the Institute for Peace and Development, urged residents and political actors to act responsibly during campaigns and on election day. He emphasized that Anambra State is bigger than any political interest and warned against actions or statements that could ignite violence.

Dr. Festus Ozioma Ozoemena, International President of UN-PEPOLAC, explained that the march aimed to reinforce the centrality of peace in elections, noting that when peace is disregarded, crises and legal disputes often follow. He called on politicians to focus on ideology, problem-solving, and constructive engagement rather than hate speech.

Similarly, Ichie Damian Okeke Ogene, immediate past National Vice President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, stressed restraint among political actors and their followers, highlighting the importance of protecting Anambra’s reputation for peace. Prof. Cornelius Ukwueze, a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, described the march as a wake-up call, urging security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure credible and peaceful polls for the development of the state.
