Plateau State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Musa Ibrahim Ashoms, has assured the local organizing committee (LOC) of the Nigerian Colleges of Agriculture and Related Disciplines of full partnership as the state prepares to host the upcoming sports tournament.

Ashoms made the pledge when he received officials of the Colleges at his office in the JD Gomwalk Secretariat, Jos. He commended the LOC for bringing the tournament to Jos, emphasizing that the city remains one of the safest in Nigeria despite isolated security challenges in some parts of the state.

The Commissioner highlighted the Mutfwang-led administration’s commitment to sports, noting that Plateau has hosted multiple tournaments in football, basketball, and volleyball, as well as conferences and workshops with participants from across the country. He further stated that athletes now receive welfare and entitlements before tournaments, ending the era of under-supported representation.

He disclosed that gold medalists in individual events will receive N1 million, team gold medalists N1.5 million, silver medalists N750,000, and bronze medalists N500,000. Participants without medals will get N50,000 each. Ashoms also revealed that the Rwang Pam Township Stadium is undergoing remodeling to meet national and international standards, with future attention set for the Zaria Road stadium, supported by willing investors.

Ashoms assured that the Ministry will actively partner with the LOC to ensure a successful tournament.

Speaking earlier, National President of the Nigerian Colleges of Agriculture and Related Disciplines, Okechalu Audu Ali, said the visit was to brief the Commissioner on the forthcoming “VOM 2025” games, scheduled for 23 November to 7 December 2025, and to seek facilitation for a meeting with Governor Caleb Mutfwang, expected to serve as chief host.

Ali noted that the tournament will showcase Plateau’s agricultural potential, with the official logo featuring strawberries, and provide a platform for discovering grassroots talents in sports. He emphasized the importance of engaging the grassroots to ensure fresh talent development and reduce reliance on recycled athletes.
