Amnesty International Rallies Behind Activist Omoyele Sowore Amid Alleged Harassment by Nigerian Authorities

Published on 25 September 2025 at 18:06

Amnesty International Nigeria has expressed solidarity with human rights activist Omoyele Sowore at the Federal High Court, Abuja, highlighting concerns over repeated targeting by Nigerian authorities for exercising his right to freedom of expression.

Since November 2019, Sowore has reportedly faced a series of unlawful detentions, harassment, politically motivated investigations, and sham trials based on disputed charges. Reports indicate that both the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) have allegedly attempted to monitor and restrict Sowore’s social media activities without legal justification, contrary to international human rights law and Nigeria’s Constitution (1999, as amended).

Amnesty International called on authorities to allow Sowore, alongside other activists and journalists, to carry out their work freely, without fear of intimidation, harassment, or reprisals.

The organization stressed that the ongoing prosecution of Sowore reflects a broader trend of shrinking civic space and an escalating crackdown on human rights in Nigeria.
