NCDC Conducts National Review Following Suspected Ebola Case

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) convened a National Technical Review Meeting on 23 September 2025, bringing together key national and subnational stakeholders to evaluate the country’s response to a recent suspected Ebola case.

The meeting focused on reviewing surveillance systems, laboratory diagnostics, infection prevention and control measures, points of entry protocols, coordination, and risk communication strategies. Participants identified gaps in existing procedures and agreed on corrective measures to enhance Nigeria’s readiness for Ebola and other Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers (VHFs).

Nigeria has a track record of effectively responding to Ebola outbreaks, including the 2014 outbreak in Lagos, which was successfully contained through rapid surveillance, contact tracing, and multi-sectoral coordination. Lessons from past responses informed discussions at the meeting, ensuring that corrective actions would strengthen preparedness, reduce response time, and improve patient outcomes in future suspected cases.

The NCDC emphasized that timely detection and rapid response are key pillars of national health security. Strengthening laboratory capacity, expanding surveillance networks, training healthcare workers, and ensuring robust communication to the public remain critical components of Nigeria’s strategy to prevent the spread of VHFs.

To support these efforts, the NCDC encourages members of the public to remain vigilant by reporting unusual illnesses, practicing good hygiene, and following official health guidance. Communities are also urged to cooperate with local health authorities during investigations and vaccination campaigns, which are crucial in preventing outbreaks from spreading.

This collaborative review underscores the country’s commitment to protecting citizens from emerging infectious diseases and highlights the ongoing efforts of national and subnational health authorities to maintain vigilance, readiness, and effective coordination in line with global health standards.
