
Vice President Kashim Shettima held a high-level meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at UN headquarters in the United States today, focusing on Nigeria’s aspirations for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council and other strategic partnerships. The engagement underscored Nigeria’s commitment to global collaboration on peace, democracy, and development.
During the meeting, Vice President Shettima highlighted Nigeria’s bid for a permanent seat on the Security Council, emphasizing the country’s readiness to play a more decisive role in shaping international peace and security. Discussions also covered collaboration on the Sustainable Development Goals, climate change, and regional initiatives for democracy and security in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar noted that the UN Secretary-General commended Nigeria for advancing its Security Council aspirations. Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, added that Guterres expressed optimism about Nigeria’s emerging leadership in artificial intelligence, citing the country’s recent launch of the first multilingual and multimodal large language model on the African continent. The Secretary-General encouraged Nigeria to support other African nations in leveraging AI for development.
Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, highlighted discussions on humanitarian crises and poverty reduction, noting that Nigeria’s national social register covers nearly 18.9 million households, with over 8.1 million Nigerians benefiting from conditional cash transfers. He further explained that the UN pledged continued support to enhance the ministry’s capacity, authenticate the social register, and secure additional funding for interventions aimed at poverty alleviation.
Earlier, Vice President Shettima also met with the United Kingdom’s Deputy Prime Minister, David Lammy MP, where both sides pledged to deepen cooperation in trade, defense, and migration.
The Vice President concluded his engagements by attending the Global Leadership Council Meeting at UNICEF Headquarters, emphasizing digital inclusion, youth engagement, and the empowerment of women and girls as central pillars of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He stressed that these initiatives aim to harness innovation, inclusivity, and leadership development to strengthen Nigeria’s social and economic growth.
