Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that only safe and properly prepared herbal medicines are sold across the State, as part of efforts to protect residents’ health.
The assurance was given by the Chairman of the Edo State Traditional Medicine Board, High Chief (TDr.) Abudu Ugbesia Godwin JP, during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting with Agbo Herbal Medicine Practitioners at the Board’s office in Benin City.
High Chief Ugbesia emphasized that all herbal medicine practitioners must be licensed and registered with the Board before selling or administering treatments. He condemned untrained and unlicensed individuals selling harmful substances, noting that such activities tarnish the reputation of genuine practitioners. The Board is actively identifying offenders and taking steps to bring them to justice.
Additionally, Governor Monday Okpebholo has approved the establishment of a botanical garden to boost cultivation of medicinal roots and herbs, supporting traditional medicine practices in the State.
Leaders of professional associations, including Alhaji Mustapha S. Abere of the Ifesowapo Trado-Medical Association and Chief (TDr.) Adeniyi Omoboriowo of the Ifelodun Trado-Medical Practitioners Association, assured full cooperation with the Board in promoting safe practices and identifying unlicensed practitioners.
TDr. Pius Omofesi further advised practitioners against mixing orthodox medicine with herbal remedies, stressing the importance of proper medical tests before administering treatments.
