The Kaduna State Government has expressed concern over the poor turnout in the ongoing voter registration exercise, calling on council chairmen, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and the media to intensify mobilisation efforts.
Commissioner for Information, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Kaduna, said Governor Uba Sani has introduced practical measures to boost participation and ensure more eligible voters register ahead of the elections.
According to Maiyaki, preliminary reports from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reveal that Kaduna State, alongside other states in the North West, is lagging behind in registration figures — a development that has already attracted the attention of the federal government.
He explained that the engagement was expanded to include diverse stakeholders due to their critical roles in mobilising different segments of the population.
“This is not about politics,” he noted. “It is about encouraging youths, women, the elderly, and all groups in society to engage fully in this civic duty.”
The commissioner commended some local government chairmen who have already commenced awareness campaigns within their areas, stressing that the meeting provided a platform to share experiences and align grassroots strategies.
The interactive session was conducted in two phases: first with media representatives to drive public awareness, and then with council chairmen to strengthen community-level mobilisation.
