As part of efforts to strengthen the growth of small enterprises in Nigeria, the Federal Government has launched the free registration of 250,000 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) nationwide.

The scheme, which falls under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative, was unveiled on Friday in Abuja during the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN).

Addressing stakeholders at the event, the Registrar-General of CAC, Hussaini Ishaq Magaji (SAN), announced that the Commission would waive all statutory charges associated with business name registration to ensure a smooth process. He explained that beneficiaries would receive their certificates without unnecessary delays, adding that the initiative aims to formalise thousands of small businesses currently operating informally.

Magaji further noted that SMEDAN will be responsible for mobilising and profiling eligible entrepreneurs, while both agencies will jointly monitor implementation to guarantee transparency, accountability, and measurable impact.

On his part, the Director-General of SMEDAN, Charles Odii, described the programme as a breakthrough for small-scale operators across the country. He said the initiative demonstrates President Tinubu’s commitment to empowering MSMEs, which, according to him, contribute a significant share to Nigeria’s GDP and job creation.

Odii highlighted that beyond free registration, SMEDAN is also implementing various empowerment schemes designed to improve access to finance, markets, and capacity-building opportunities for small business owners.

The event climaxed with the formal signing of the MoU between the two agencies, officially setting the stage for the nationwide rollout of the free business registration exercise.
