President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the Nigerian Armed Forces to remain steadfast in protecting the country’s economic interests and safeguarding national values against the growing threats of terrorism and insurgency. The President delivered the message through Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio, who represented him at the combined passing-out parade and commissioning ceremony of Cadets of the 72nd Regular Course at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna.

In his address, President Tinubu warned that insurgents and terrorists are not only bent on destabilising the nation but also aim to undermine ongoing developmental reforms by creating counter-state structures. He urged the graduating cadets to remain committed to defending Nigeria’s economy and institutions, stressing that their role is central to revitalising the Armed Forces despite the violence and propaganda orchestrated by enemies of the state. He reminded them never to lose sight of the vision of Nigeria’s founding fathers, regardless of the complex security challenges confronting the nation.

The President commended the NDA for its technological innovations in military training and research, noting that the academy’s reforms have improved efficiency and effectiveness in responding to contemporary security threats. He also praised the institution for its overhaul of training curricula and methodologies, aligning with the evolving dynamics of modern warfare. Addressing the cadets, he congratulated them on their successful passing out and reminded them that the current national security climate presents the perfect moment to prove their valour and uphold the virtues upon which the academy was founded.

The commissioning ceremony, which brought together military leaders and dignitaries, further underscored the importance of Nigeria’s military preparedness at a time when insurgency, banditry, and terrorism continue to pose threats to national unity and development. Analysts believe the President’s message reflects a growing recognition that security is not only about protecting lives and territory but also about defending the economic foundation of the country, which remains vulnerable to instability.
