Troops of the Nigerian Army have intercepted an arms courier in Kwara State, neutralising the suspect and recovering five AK-47 rifles and three magazines hidden inside a charcoal sack. The operation, carried out by soldiers of the 22 Armoured Brigade under Operation Park Strike V, took place on Thursday, September 25, 2025, along the Share–Gbugbu Road in Edu Local Government Area.
According to military sources, the successful operation followed credible intelligence that the courier was transporting weapons from Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State. Acting swiftly, troops stationed at Patrol Base Bukungi mounted a snap checkpoint where they intercepted a Volkswagen Golf 3 vehicle with registration number Bayelsa SAG-133 XA. The driver attempted to escape but was gunned down after refusing to comply with orders to stop. A subsequent search revealed the concealed weapons intended for delivery.
Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, commended the troops for their vigilance and professionalism, describing the operation as a major step in frustrating criminal networks in the region. He called on the soldiers to sustain the tempo, assuring residents of Kwara State and neighbouring communities that the Army remains committed to protecting lives and property. He further appealed to members of the public to continue providing timely intelligence, stressing that community cooperation is vital in the battle against banditry, terrorism, and arms trafficking.
The interception comes at a time when the country is grappling with persistent insecurity across different regions, with illicit arms fuelling insurgency, banditry, and communal violence. Security experts believe such breakthroughs are critical in disrupting supply lines that enable criminal groups to sustain their activities. The Army has vowed to intensify its operations and remain resolute in its constitutional mandate to defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity while ridding the nation of criminal threats.
