The Delta State Government has taken decisive action against health workers found extorting pregnant women and children under five, despite the state’s free healthcare policy.
The announcement was made by Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, during the flag-off of the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiatives (MAMIl) Project in Ashaka, Ndokwa East. Dr. Onojaeme stressed that such unethical practices would not be tolerated and reiterated the state’s commitment to providing free and quality healthcare to vulnerable populations.
He further highlighted that maternal mortality in the state has dropped significantly, attributing the improvement to strengthened healthcare policies and enhanced monitoring of service delivery. The commissioner called on health workers to uphold integrity and professionalism, warning that any violation of patient rights would attract stern disciplinary measures.
The MAMIl Project aims to further reduce maternal and neonatal mortality through targeted interventions, capacity building, and community sensitization across Delta State.
