Human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that the Department of State Services (DSS) has launched a coordinated campaign against him, including efforts to pressure social media platforms after he criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over claims that corruption had “vanished” under his administration.

In posts on X (formerly Twitter), Sowore claimed that DSS Director-General Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi deployed senior operatives to monitor his associates, gather intelligence, and identify sources of leaks to Sahara Reporters. He tied the alleged targeting to his reporting on the deaths of eight DSS officers during a promotion exam, which he said caused internal unrest within the agency.

Sowore asserted that the DSS had “declared a full-blown war” on him, rounding up officers accused of leaking information and deploying online trolls to counter his reporting. He further alleged that sources warned him of an assassination plot, with the DSS providing technical support.

He also referenced past clashes with the agency, recalling an attempted assassination in open court during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, and claimed the confiscation of his international passport since January 2025 was a calculated effort to keep him confined in Nigeria while facing cybercrime and other ongoing legal proceedings.

The DSS has yet to respond publicly. Nigerians on social media reacted with mixed views, some expressing concern for Sowore’s safety and calling for international attention, while others accused him of exaggerating or politicizing the agency’s actions.
