Dr. Festus Ukadike, South-East Zonal Director of NAFDAC, has called on the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), Enugu Chapter, to actively collaborate with the Agency in combating substandard and falsified medicines. Emphasizing the critical role of pharmacists in protecting public health, Dr. Ukadike urged them to ensure that only safe, quality, and effective medicines are made available to Nigerians.
During a familiarization visit to NAFDAC, ACPN Enugu Chairman Kenneth Amafidegbe reaffirmed the association’s commitment to supporting NAFDAC’s regulatory mandate. The State Coordinator, Collins Ogedegbe, reminded members of the legal requirement for proper registration of all regulated products and encouraged strict adherence to compliance standards.
Public reaction to the partnership call has been largely positive, with pharmacists expressing readiness to cooperate and strengthen the distribution of genuine medicines across communities. Consumers welcomed the initiative, noting that increased vigilance by both regulators and pharmacists is critical to reducing the circulation of counterfeit drugs, which have previously posed serious health risks.
Experts highlighted that improved collaboration between regulatory agencies and pharmacists could significantly enhance public confidence in the pharmaceutical sector, reduce healthcare costs associated with ineffective treatments, and protect Nigeria’s healthcare system from reputational and economic damage. They noted that tackling falsified medicines not only saves lives but also encourages foreign investors in the pharmaceutical industry, fostering growth in the healthcare economy.
