As part of efforts to resuscitate and modernize Borno State Television (BRTV), a high-powered committee from Borno State conducted a study visit to the Kaduna State Media Corporation (KSMC) on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. Led by Professor Usman Tar, Chairman of the committee and Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, the delegation aimed to learn from the operational successes of established media houses in northern Nigeria.

Professor Tar explained that the visit was initiated by Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, reflecting the state government’s commitment to restoring BRTV, which suffered extensive damage during last year’s floods in Maiduguri. He emphasized that the committee sought to understand how KSMC has excelled in digitization, content development, and administrative efficiency, with the goal of applying similar strategies to BRTV.

The Kaduna media management welcomed the delegation, commending Borno State’s proactive approach toward reviving its broadcasting services. They highlighted areas for potential collaboration, including staff training, content exchange, and technical development, to ensure that BRTV could meet contemporary broadcasting standards and audience expectations.

During the visit, the committee toured KSMC’s facilities, including its newly completed headquarters, and engaged in detailed discussions on operational systems, digital infrastructure, and content management practices. Professor Tar noted that understanding KSMC’s workflow, technical setup, and management practices would be instrumental in developing a sustainable plan for BRTV’s modernization.

The study tour also provided an opportunity to assess how KSMC manages its human resources, content programming, and technological investments. The Borno delegation expressed strong interest in adapting these models to strengthen BRTV’s capacity for timely, reliable, and engaging broadcast content. The committee emphasized that the revitalization of BRTV would not merely involve repairing damaged infrastructure but also enhancing operational efficiency, content quality, and public engagement.

Professor Tar affirmed that lessons from Kaduna would inform a strategic framework for BRTV’s rehabilitation, focusing on rapid yet sustainable improvements. He assured that the government was committed to ensuring that BRTV serves as a modern platform for information dissemination, education, and public service. He added that the committee would continue to work closely with media stakeholders to implement best practices and technological upgrades.

The visit reflected a broader vision of collaboration between states and media institutions, highlighting the value of shared experiences and knowledge transfer. It underscored the importance of adopting proven approaches in broadcasting operations, particularly in areas affected by natural disasters or infrastructural setbacks.

At the conclusion of the visit, the delegation held a brief interaction session with KSMC officials to discuss potential joint initiatives and capacity-building programs. Professor Tar expressed optimism that the insights gained would enable BRTV to achieve higher standards in content production and delivery, positioning it as a leading state-owned media house in Nigeria.

The Borno State committee comprises key officials, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, the General Manager of BRTV, and other senior media and administrative personnel. Their engagement with KSMC highlighted a shared commitment to modern, efficient, and citizen-focused broadcasting.

The visit concluded with group photographs and a firm resolve to implement lessons learned, marking a significant step toward BRTV’s revival. Professor Tar reiterated that this initiative aligns with the state government’s broader goal of strengthening public communication infrastructure, improving media services, and fostering transparency and accountability in governance.

Borno State’s approach reflects a proactive effort to integrate technology, human capacity, and management efficiency in state media operations, signaling a promising future for BRTV as it prepares to resume full operations with improved services and enhanced public trust.
