The Anambra State Government has officially disbursed ₦3.5 billion as start-up funds to 8,300 beneficiaries of the second phase of the 1Youth 2Skills program, in a ceremony held at the International Convention Center in Awka. The initiative, aimed at empowering youths with entrepreneurial skills and financial support, seeks to foster self-reliance and create employment opportunities in the state.
Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo described the program as a vital tool for human capital development and urged beneficiaries to maximize the resources provided to become self-employed and employers of labor. He emphasized that participants had received comprehensive training in various skill areas, preparing them to effectively manage their ventures. Governor Soludo also commended the management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University for its partnership in the initiative and congratulated the graduating youths, urging them to apply the knowledge gained to guarantee long-term success.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, highlighted the broad-based and inclusive nature of the 1Youth 2Skills program. He explained that the initiative encompasses several sub-programs, including retraining and certification for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), value reorientation, and community-focused approaches. According to the Commissioner, the program is designed to shift youth engagement from immediate consumption to productive, innovative, and impactful economic participation, fostering a massive economic transformation across the state.
Participants praised the program for its practical approach to skill acquisition and entrepreneurship. Bagbile Daniel Kehinde, a Corps Member from Ogun State and one of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude to Governor Soludo, the Anambra State Government, and UNIZIK Business School for the opportunity. Trained in cinematography, Kehinde now works professionally in the field, highlighting how the initiative has enabled him to become self-reliant and productive. Speaking on behalf of fellow corps members, he emphasized that the program represents an investment not just in individual participants, but in the future of Nigeria’s workforce.
Several other beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the state government’s commitment to youth development and the privilege of acquiring new skills through the program. They affirmed that the initiative has given them the confidence and resources to establish their own businesses and contribute meaningfully to the state’s economy.
The graduation ceremony was attended by Deputy Governor Dr. Ibezim, members of the Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC), traditional rulers, clergy, and other dignitaries, all of whom applauded the state government’s sustained efforts to empower young people and stimulate economic growth. The program underscores Anambra State’s dedication to harnessing the potential of its youth population through skill development, entrepreneurship, and strategic investments in human capital.
