Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command attached to the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu have arrested a 62-year-old male suspect, Bernard Odinchefu, alleged to be an informant of a secessionist group and the head of a major extortion network in parts of Ihiala Local Government Area. The arrest, which took place on 1st October 2025, is part of ongoing efforts by the police to dismantle criminal structures linked to insurgent groups in the state.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect oversaw the collection of illegal levies from traders in Isseke and Orsumoghu communities, demanding amounts of ₦10,000 or more monthly from each trader. Additionally, he allegedly extorted ₦100,000 or higher from families hosting burial ceremonies or similar events, with the illicit proceeds reportedly remitted to his commander in a terrorist camp.
The suspect remains in custody as further investigation continues to unravel the extent of the network and its connections to broader insurgent activities. The Anambra State Police Command has assured residents of its continued commitment to protecting citizens from exploitation by criminal elements operating under the guise of agitation.
Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, FWC, MINPS, PhD, emphasized that the arrest is part of sustained operations to rid the state of elements seeking to destabilize communities. He reiterated that the police will take decisive action against individuals who use intimidation, extortion, or terror-linked activities to exploit innocent residents.
The arrest highlights the proactive measures of the Anambra State Police Command in safeguarding public safety and ensuring that security structures are in place to prevent the infiltration of insurgent networks into local communities. Authorities continue to urge residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in reporting suspicious activities to aid in ongoing security efforts.
