The Yobe State Government has formally taken over 176 housing units from the Federal Government at a cost exceeding ₦2 billion, a major step toward reducing the state’s housing deficit and improving access to affordable homes for residents.
The handover ceremony took place at the Maisandari Housing Estate in Damaturu, the state capital, where the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, represented by Mathius Iliya Kastula, officially handed the estate to Governor Mai Mala Buni, CON. Governor Buni, represented by the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Ahmad Buba, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the transfer, describing it as an effort to restore dignity to citizens through access to decent shelter.
Out of the 208 units constructed by the Federal Government, Yobe State acquired 176, while plans are underway to complete and rehabilitate the remaining 32 units. The acquisition is expected to reduce housing shortages, ease urban pressures, stabilize rents, create jobs through rehabilitation, and stimulate growth in surrounding neighborhoods.
The takeover of Maisandari Housing Estate is considered a key milestone in Governor Buni’s initiative to provide safe, affordable, and sustainable housing for the people of Yobe State.
