The Lagos State Health Districts’ Body of Permanent Secretaries recently organized a free medical outreach in commemoration of World Cardiac Day 2025, under the theme “Don’t Miss a Beat.” The initiative aimed to raise awareness about cardiovascular health and encourage residents to adopt practices that support heart well-being.
Ikeja Local Government Chairman, Hon. Akeem Daudu, who hosted the Permanent Secretaries of Lagos State Health Districts I-VI, emphasized the importance of World Heart Day. He said, “Every 29th of September, we celebrate World Heart Day to raise awareness of cardiac issues and the importance of taking care of our hearts, from individuals, families, schools, community groups, and government. Therefore, we should work to make equitable heart health a priority and drive change across Lagos State.”
During the event, the Permanent Secretaries highlighted several lesser-known signs of heart disease that residents often overlook. These include weak grip, swelling of the lower legs, changes in skin colour, sexual health challenges, and sleep apnea. They noted that recognizing these signs early can contribute to timely medical intervention and reduce long-term risks.
The officials also shared strategies for preventing heart disease, advising Lagosians to undergo regular health screenings, manage stress, get adequate sleep, maintain a healthy weight, follow a heart-healthy diet, engage in 30 to 60 minutes of daily physical activity, avoid smoking, and limit alcohol consumption. These recommendations were emphasized as part of a broader effort to encourage preventive health practices and reduce the prevalence of cardiovascular disease.
The Permanent Secretaries present at the event included Dr. Dayo Lajide of HD I, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke of HD II, Dr. Funmilayo Bankole of HD III, Dr. Abimbola Bowale of HD IV, Dr. Dapo Asiyanbi of HD V, and Dr. Abimbola Mabogunje of HD VI.
Following the awareness session, participants benefited from free medical screening tests and the distribution of medications. The outreach provided both educational and practical support for residents, allowing them to assess their heart health while learning about preventive measures. The initiative also reinforced the role of community engagement and government-led programs in promoting health awareness and improving access to medical resources across Lagos State.
