Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has flagged off a food donation initiative in Yobe State aimed at supporting vulnerable groups, including women, the elderly, and people with special needs.

The First Lady, who was represented at the event by the wife of the Vice President, Nana Kashim Shettima, explained that the intervention forms part of the Renewed Hope Initiative’s outreach scheme designed to ease the burden of food insecurity and empower women in agriculture.

She noted that the initiative focuses on equipping women farmers with training, start-up resources, and tools to strengthen agricultural productivity. According to her, these efforts are in line with both national and state-level policies geared towards reducing dependence on food imports while promoting local production and food self-sufficiency.

In addition to agricultural support, Senator Tinubu highlighted that the programme provides medical outreach to senior citizens and people with special needs, with plans to extend similar interventions to 200 individuals in each of Nigeria’s 36 states.

Welcoming the initiative, Yobe State First Lady and state coordinator of the programme, Hajiya Hafsat Mai Mala Buni, commended Senator Tinubu for her compassion and for extending assistance to vulnerable households in the state. She also praised the Yobe government’s ongoing investments in women’s empowerment, skills training, and recovery programmes in the aftermath of the insurgency.

Hajiya Hafsat further emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting girl-child education, noting the establishment of eight girls’ secondary schools across the state. She celebrated the recent achievement of three Yobe students—Nafisa Abdullahi, Rukayya Mohammed Fema, and Khadija Kashim Kalli—who emerged as world champions at the TeenEagle 2025 Global Championship in London, describing it as a source of pride for the state and Nigeria.

Representing Governor Mai Mala Buni at the event, Deputy Governor Hon. Idi Barde Gubana reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to partnering with the Renewed Hope Initiative. He pledged continued support for programmes that uplift women and vulnerable persons, stressing that such collaborations are vital for sustainable social and economic development.
