Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has released ₦5.6 billion to pay severance and gratuity entitlements owed to 1,198 former councillors who served between 2018 and 2020 under the administration of ex-Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
The payment, which also covers accommodation and leave allowances, was announced at a ceremony held at Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano. The governor described the settlement as a demonstration of his administration’s commitment to fairness and justice in governance.
According to a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, this disbursement represents the second batch of liabilities inherited from the previous administration. Earlier in May 2025, Governor Yusuf had approved ₦1.8 billion for 903 former councillors in the first phase of the exercise.
Governor Yusuf explained that his government inherited a total of ₦15.6 billion in outstanding obligations to former councillors. With the latest release, a balance of ₦8.2 billion remains, which he pledged would be cleared by November to finally settle the backlog for 1,371 additional beneficiaries.
“This is more than a financial settlement. It is about restoring dignity, fairness, and justice to those who sacrificed for grassroots governance,” the governor stated. He urged the beneficiaries to use the funds wisely to support their families and contribute to community development.
The event was marked by excitement, with many councillors confirming they had received instant payment alerts during the programme. Leaders of the beneficiaries, who are largely members of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed gratitude to Governor Yusuf for setting aside political differences to honor their entitlements.
“We wish to express our unalloyed respect to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf who, despite our political differences, was able to be fair and just to us. We remain indebted to him throughout his first and second tenure,” a spokesperson for the group declared.
