The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed two Chinese supermarkets and eight cosmetics shops in Abuja for alleged violations of Nigeria’s product safety regulations.
The affected supermarkets, located along Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street in the Jabi District, were shut down after surveillance teams confirmed they were selling unregistered food items labelled only in Chinese. The agency noted that such practices contravene Nigeria’s labelling policy, which requires that all regulated products carry English translations for consumers.
In a related enforcement operation, NAFDAC also sealed eight cosmetics shops at Wuse Market. These outlets were reportedly selling banned, expired, and unregistered products, including aphrodisiacs and aesthetic medicines. Some individuals at the shops were allegedly posing as dermatologists and pharmacists, prescribing harmful substances to unsuspecting customers.
Products confiscated during the raids were valued at over ₦170 million. Among them were Wenicks Capsules, Maxman Capsules, Curvy Weight Gain supplements, Skin Whitening Vitamin Gummies, Collagen, Glutathione Whitening Gummies, and several unverified herbal medicines. According to NAFDAC, these items pose serious health risks such as kidney damage, skin cancer, and neurological disorders.
Speaking on the crackdown, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the operation demonstrates the agency’s renewed commitment to protecting public health. She warned that those dealing in unregistered or toxic products would face severe sanctions, stressing that Nigeria’s regulatory framework is designed to safeguard lives.
She further urged foreign nationals and investors intending to distribute food, cosmetics, or pharmaceuticals in Nigeria to follow due process by registering their products with NAFDAC and adhering strictly to the country’s regulatory guidelines.
The enforcement exercise comes amid growing concerns over the influx of counterfeit and unregulated products into local markets, which health experts warn could undermine public safety if left unchecked.
