The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, has reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to strengthening accountability at the grassroots level as he led the management team to the launch of the Nigerian Local Government Integrity Index Report.

The event, organized by the Centre for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity, was held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja and brought together key stakeholders from government, civil society, and the development sector.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Aliyu emphasized that the Integrity Index was developed as part of broader reforms aimed at promoting openness, discouraging corruption, and ensuring that local governments deliver on their constitutional responsibilities to the people. He noted that corruption and lack of transparency at the local government level often undermine development, especially in rural communities where government intervention is most needed.

“The Integrity Index is a tool to measure compliance with standards of accountability and to encourage healthy competition among local governments to improve governance practices,” the ICPC Chairman stated.

He further explained that the Commission’s collaboration with the Centre for Fiscal Transparency reflects a shared vision of building stronger institutions capable of resisting corrupt practices and entrenching service delivery at the grassroots.

Stakeholders at the event highlighted the need for effective monitoring mechanisms and community participation to ensure that resources allocated to local governments are used for their intended purposes. They also underscored the importance of data-driven approaches in evaluating transparency and improving citizen trust in governance.

The launch of the Local Government Integrity Index Report is expected to serve as a benchmark for assessing the performance of local government administrations across Nigeria, guiding reforms that will enhance accountability and bring government closer to the people.
