The Edo State Government (EDSG) has formally inaugurated a Committee to strengthen coordination in tackling drug abuse and illicit trafficking across the state. The ceremony took place at the New Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, with the Deputy Governor, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, representing Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo.
The Governor, through the Deputy, emphasized that the Committee’s establishment is a strategic move to safeguard society, curb crime, and protect citizens from the dangers of substance abuse. “This gathering marks a vital step in our commitment to addressing the scourge of drug trafficking and abuse that threatens the fabric of our society,” he said. He noted that the initiative aligns with the National Drug Control Master Plan and underlined the need for a collaborative approach involving all stakeholders.
Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, Coordinator of the Office of the Edo State First Lady and Chairperson of the Committee, described drug abuse as a pervasive challenge affecting youths and fueling crime. She stressed the critical role of women in anti-drug efforts, citing their unique ability to connect with children and influence positive change. She further advocated for community sensitization, radio campaigns, and the inclusion of drug testing alongside other pre-marital health checks.
Commander of Narcotics, Edo State Command, National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), CN Mitchell Ofoyeju, highlighted that Edo State is the first in Nigeria to establish a dedicated state-level Drug Control Committee. He shared that the state’s drug prevalence rate stands at 15%, slightly above the national average of 14.4%, representing about 330,000 residents. The Committee aims to improve public health, raise community awareness, disrupt trafficking networks, and provide treatment and rehabilitation for affected individuals.
The inauguration was capped with the administration of the oath of office to all Committee members by Governor Okpebholo, formalizing their roles in driving the state’s drug control agenda. Officials emphasized that the Committee’s success would depend on sustained stakeholder collaboration and proactive public engagement to create a drug-free Edo State.
