The Nigeria Police Force has begun enforcing tinted-glass regulations, a move officials say is necessary for public safety. ASP Nahum Kenneth DASO, Police Public Relations Officer, Borno State Command, stated on 4th October 2025 that the measure is based on the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991, and has been modernized through the Police Specialized Services Automation Project (POSSAP).

Under POSSAP, tinted-glass permits are linked to National Identification Numbers, biometric data, and detailed vehicle records. The system allows authorities to identify and trace vehicles when involved in criminal activity. ASP DASO said tinted windows have been used in armed robberies, kidnappings, drug trafficking, and other crimes to conceal identities or illegal items.

He cited incidents to highlight the importance of regulation. On April 2, 2024, a University of Maiduguri lecturer was murdered, and CCTV footage of the assailants was obscured by heavily tinted windows, delaying investigation. On September 26, 2025, three children died in Borno State after becoming trapped in a dark-tinted vehicle, which prevented timely intervention by passersby. These examples demonstrate how unregulated tinted glass can impact both crime investigations and public safety.

The policy allows exemptions for medical conditions such as photophobia, certain VIPs, and vehicles with factory-fitted tinted glass. ASP DASO explained that vehicle owners must register and obtain permits through POSSAP, creating a verifiable database that assists law enforcement.

The Nigeria Police Force has directed officers to enforce the regulations professionally and respect citizens’ rights. Citizens are encouraged to report any unprofessional conduct through the Complaint Response Unit (CRU).

ASP DASO emphasized that regulation is not a ban but a system of accountability. The enforcement aims to ensure vehicles with tinted glass are registered and traceable, helping authorities respond effectively to criminal incidents and safety risks.

The Police maintain that the initiative strengthens law enforcement capabilities and public safety by reducing anonymity for vehicles that could otherwise be used to commit crimes.
