The Federal Government has commended Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, for his administration’s investment in health infrastructure and reforms in Gombe State, describing the state as a model for health system strengthening in Nigeria.

The commendation was given by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, during the commissioning of an ultra-modern Accident and Emergency (A&E) unit at the General Hospital, Kaltungo.

The new A&E facility, constructed under Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s leadership, includes consulting rooms, a triage area, seminar rooms, a library, restrooms, and offices. According to the Gombe State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, the project forms part of comprehensive upgrades aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery in the state.

Professor Pate praised the Governor’s health sector reforms, which cover the revitalization of primary health centres, hospital upgrades, human resource development, and specialized medical centres. He noted that the conversion of the former Kumo General Hospital into a Federal Medical Centre aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Minister also lauded Governor Yahaya’s recent approval of CONMESS and CONHESS salary structures for health workers, describing it as a bold decision to retain skilled personnel and ensure effective service delivery across health facilities.

Governor Yahaya, in his remarks, attributed the achievements to teamwork and collaboration. “All the praise belongs to the team. Facilities alone are not enough, which is why we incentivized our health workers so our facilities, from primary to tertiary, can function effectively,” he said.

While on an inspection visit to the Snakebite Treatment and Research Centre in Kaltungo, Professor Pate highlighted its regional and international importance, especially during farming seasons when snakebites are most prevalent. He disclosed that the centre treats between 2,000 and 3,000 patients annually, serving patients not only from Gombe State but also from across the Northeast and neighbouring countries.

He further explained that the Federal Government, in partnership with Gombe State, will strengthen the centre’s role as a regional hub for treatment, training, research, and in the long term, local production of anti-snake venom.

According to a statement issued by Ismaila Uba Misilli, Director-General (Press Affairs), Government House Gombe, the commissioning and inspection reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improving healthcare access and positioning Gombe as a leader in medical research and services.
