Six individuals, including a baby, were rescued by Nigerian Army and Police personnel in Taraba State on 2 October 2025 following their abduction by suspected kidnappers. The operation was conducted by troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army in conjunction with the Nigeria Police as part of ongoing security measures under Operation LAFIYA NAKOWA.
The victims were reportedly intercepted while traveling in a Toyota Carina II from Katsina-Ala in Benue State. Armed assailants stopped the vehicle near an abandoned checkpoint and forcibly took the passengers into nearby bushland. Security forces, acting on timely intelligence, carried out a search operation that led to the recovery of the six individuals. The rescued victims—comprising five adults and a child—have been reunited with their families, while authorities continue to pursue the perpetrators and investigate whether additional victims remain in captivity.
This incident reflects broader security challenges in North Central Nigeria, where kidnapping and armed attacks have increasingly disrupted daily life, commerce, and transportation. States including Taraba, Benue, and Nasarawa have reported rising incidents of abductions for ransom, often targeting travelers along major highways and isolated rural areas. Analysts note that these security threats compound existing infrastructural limitations, making timely intervention and victim recovery more difficult.
Authorities emphasize that coordination between military units and civilian law enforcement is critical in responding to kidnappings and violent incidents. Public cooperation, including the reporting of suspicious activity, is also considered essential in supporting ongoing operations. Residents are advised to exercise caution while traveling, avoid known high-risk routes, and remain alert to potential security threats.
Operation LAFIYA NAKOWA represents one of several government initiatives aimed at stabilizing the region, reducing kidnappings, and enhancing public safety. While recovery of victims marks a positive outcome, experts indicate that long-term solutions will require sustained investment in security infrastructure, intelligence networks, and community engagement to address both the immediate and underlying causes of insecurity.
The operation highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing rapid tactical responses with broader strategic efforts to improve safety and prevent further incidents in North Central Nigeria.
