The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, visited Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, the first Chairman of the agency, to discuss developments within the Corps and the upcoming Africa Conference on Road Traffic Crash Victims. The meeting took place at Professor Soyinka’s residence and focused on both institutional updates and planning for future road safety initiatives.

During the meeting, the Corps Marshal provided an overview of current FRSC operations, including strategies aimed at reducing Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) across Nigeria. He invited Professor Soyinka to participate in the Africa Conference scheduled for November 2025, which will convene stakeholders from across the continent to discuss road safety policies, support mechanisms for victims, and measures to reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries.

Professor Soyinka acknowledged the information provided and indicated his continued interest in monitoring the agency’s progress. The discussion also included reflections on the historical role of the FRSC’s establishment and the development of its operational framework.

Road traffic incidents remain a significant concern in Nigeria, with government statistics indicating thousands of fatalities and injuries annually. The FRSC monitors accident trends and implements regulatory measures such as speed enforcement, driver education programs, and public awareness campaigns. Despite these interventions, road crashes continue to pose challenges to safety, particularly on major highways and in densely populated areas.

The upcoming Africa Conference on Road Traffic Crash Victims is designed to address these ongoing challenges at a continental level. Participants are expected to examine comparative data, identify best practices, and discuss collaborative approaches to victim support and prevention strategies.

Observers note that the meeting between the FRSC leadership and Professor Soyinka reflects the agency’s effort to engage both current and former leaders in discussions on governance and institutional development. While the meeting highlighted ongoing initiatives, independent assessments will be required to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions in reducing RTCs and improving road safety outcomes in Nigeria.

The FRSC continues to report data on road accidents and implement measures aimed at reducing fatalities, while the Africa Conference is expected to provide a platform for dialogue on comprehensive solutions to traffic safety challenges across the continent.
