Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, held a meeting with traditional leaders, elders, and community stakeholders of the Tombo community at the Government House in Makurdi yesterday. During the audience, he outlined a series of development initiatives intended to address long-standing infrastructure and social needs in the area.
The Governor announced the establishment of a Government Secondary School in Tombo, aimed at improving access to education for local students. In addition, he highlighted electrification projects, including the installation of transformers, to provide a more reliable power supply to the community. Road construction and rehabilitation projects were also included in the plans, with the goal of improving connectivity and supporting economic activity within the community and surrounding areas.
In conjunction with these infrastructure commitments, Governor Alia extended immediate support to residents by providing 1,000 bags of rice and financial assistance to families in need. He expressed appreciation for the traditional blessings and cultural gifts received from community leaders during the audience, reiterating his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth.
Benue State has faced persistent challenges with insecurity, particularly in areas affected by farmer-herder clashes, which have disrupted communities, hindered economic activities, and affected access to education and public services. Infrastructure deficits, such as poor road networks and inconsistent electricity supply, have compounded these challenges. Observers note that the Governor’s announcements represent a response to both long-standing developmental gaps and the urgent need to stabilize communities impacted by insecurity.
While the initiatives in Tombo are part of a broader plan to extend services and development to all communities in Benue, the implementation and monitoring of these projects will be critical in addressing underlying challenges. Stakeholders have emphasized the importance of integrating security considerations with infrastructure development to ensure that improvements are sustainable and accessible to all residents.
Governor Alia stated that his administration is committed to ensuring that no community is excluded from development programs, signaling an ongoing focus on inclusive growth and community engagement as part of efforts to mitigate the effects of insecurity and infrastructural deficits across the state.
