The Delta State Police Command has intensified its campaign against violent crime and drug trafficking, recording a series of arrests and recoveries across Asaba and nearby areas. The operations, carried out between October 1 and 3, 2025, involved officers from the ‘B’ Division, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), and the Eagle Net Special Squad (ENSS).
In one of the operations, police from the ‘B’ Division responded to a distress call around the Bonsaac area where two men reportedly robbed a woman at gunpoint. The officers, working with local vigilantes, arrested one of the suspects identified as 21-year-old Amara Nwako from Oko community. A locally made pistol was found at the scene, while his accomplice managed to escape. Investigators believe the suspects are linked to a cult group that has been behind a series of street robberies in the state capital.
In a related operation, officers of the Eagle Net Special Squad intercepted a truck transporting large quantities of suspected illicit drugs through Asaba. The driver, identified as 52-year-old Dennis Uruma from Kogi State, was arrested after the truck was stopped for a search. Authorities said the discovery points to Asaba’s growing role as a transit route for drug distribution across southern Nigeria, a concern that has been raised repeatedly by local anti-drug advocates.
Also, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad raided a hideout near the Basket Market area of Asaba following intelligence about criminal activity in the neighborhood. Three suspects — Rabbi Godwin, 25, Lucky Nanakumo, 20, and David Igwe, 19 — were arrested during the operation. A fabricated Beretta pistol was recovered from the site, believed to have been used in recent attacks on traders and commuters.
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed that all suspects are in custody and that investigations are ongoing. Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, reiterated the command’s commitment to dealing decisively with crimes involving firearms, cultism, and illicit drugs. He also called on residents to remain alert and report suspicious movements, noting that community cooperation remains critical in addressing the security challenges facing Asaba and other parts of the state.
The latest arrests come amid rising public concern over the persistence of armed attacks and cult-related violence in Delta communities. Despite regular police patrols, areas around Asaba, Ughelli, and Warri continue to record incidents linked to youth gangs and drug activities. The command’s recent actions are seen as part of a wider effort to restore confidence and curb criminal networks operating within the state.
