Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally accepted the resignation of Geoffrey Uche Nnaji from his position as Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, following allegations levelled against him. Nnaji, who was appointed to the ministerial role in August 2023, tendered his resignation in a letter to the President on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
In his resignation letter, Nnaji expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve Nigeria, while also noting that he had become the target of blackmail by political opponents. He did not provide further details regarding the nature of the allegations but emphasized his decision was made to preserve the integrity of the office and avoid any distractions from the work of the ministry.
President Tinubu acknowledged Nnaji’s contributions during his tenure and extended his best wishes for the minister’s future endeavours. The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and the ethical conduct of public officials.
Geoffrey Nnaji’s departure comes as part of the broader efforts by the Tinubu administration to ensure that key government offices maintain high standards of integrity and public trust. During his time as Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Nnaji was involved in initiatives aimed at fostering technological development, promoting innovation ecosystems, and advancing Nigeria’s digital economy.
The resignation has prompted speculation about a potential successor, with observers noting that the ministry plays a crucial role in supporting the Federal Government’s agenda for technological advancement, scientific research, and digital transformation across the country.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the development in an official statement released on October 7, 2025, underscoring that the decision was amicable and in accordance with the interests of good governance.
The Tinubu administration continues to emphasise meritocracy and competence in its appointments, signalling that any future leadership of the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology will be expected to uphold these principles while driving initiatives to position Nigeria as a hub for technological innovation in Africa.
