Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) took a significant step toward enhancing data governance and road safety as Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed led a delegation of senior management officials into a strategic engagement with the National Commissioner and CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatuji, at the FRSC National Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
The meeting provided a critical platform for both agencies to deliberate on strategies for strengthening data protection practices within Nigeria’s transport sector. Discussions focused on ensuring that sensitive operational and personal information is managed securely and in accordance with global best practices, aligning with international standards of data governance.
During the engagement, Corps Marshal Mohammed reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of its data systems while optimising their use for operational efficiency. He highlighted the growing importance of data-driven decision-making in traffic management, policy formulation, and enforcement processes, stressing that effective data governance can directly contribute to reducing road crashes and saving lives.
Dr. Olatuji, in his remarks, emphasized the synergy between the NDPC and FRSC, noting that coordinated efforts in protecting and leveraging data can enhance not only regulatory compliance but also the effectiveness of safety interventions nationwide. He underscored that robust data management practices are fundamental to policy innovation, evidence-based enforcement, and the strategic deployment of resources in the transport sector.
The collaboration between FRSC and NDPC reflects a broader commitment by Nigerian government agencies to harness technology and data responsibly to improve service delivery and public safety. Both leaders agreed that ongoing partnerships and knowledge sharing are vital to building a secure, reliable, and accountable digital framework that supports road safety initiatives across the country.
This engagement comes at a time when Nigeria’s road transport sector is increasingly adopting digital solutions, ranging from vehicle registration and driver licensing to accident data tracking and analytics. Strengthening data protection within these systems is seen as essential to enhancing operational transparency, improving public trust, and ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.
By aligning operational strategies with robust data governance, the FRSC aims to foster a culture of evidence-based enforcement and proactive intervention, ultimately contributing to a safer and more efficient transport environment for all road users.
