The First Lady of Nigeria, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has called for greater inclusion of women in political processes, stressing the need for increased representation in nation-building efforts. The call was made during the 774 Explode Programme, an empowerment initiative organized by the Office of the APC National Women Leader, held at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub in Benin City and themed, “Enhancing Gender Space in Politics.”
Represented by the Minister of Women Affairs, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim, Sen. Tinubu highlighted women’s vital contributions to national growth while noting the low representation of women in elected positions. She emphasized the importance of economic empowerment, political participation, and reserved seats for women as key to addressing social challenges and building a stronger society.
The APC National Women Leader, Dr. Mary Alile, drew attention to cultural and societal barriers that have historically discouraged women from entering politics, noting that the current generation of women is more educated and determined to engage in decision-making. She stressed that initiatives like the 774 Explode Programme are aimed at creating a pool of women ready to succeed in politics once reserved seats are implemented.
Welcoming guests, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, Coordinator, Office of the Edo State First Lady, lauded the State’s rich culture and emphasized the role of women in promoting equality, justice, and development. She highlighted systemic barriers, including societal norms and discriminatory laws, that continue to limit women’s political engagement, urging collective efforts to dismantle these hurdles. Mrs. Anani further emphasized that women’s participation strengthens governance and leads to better decision-making.
The programme featured a keynote address on “Enhancing Gender Space in Politics and Inclusive Politics,” a cultural display, and the empowerment of women through cash grants, business equipment, and food items. Beneficiaries received ₦200,000 each from a previous workshop and ₦50,000 each in addition to items such as sewing and grinding machines, as well as rice, pasta, and macaroni.
