The Edo State Government, through the Traditional Medicine Board (TMB) and in collaboration with the Ifesowapo Trado-Medical Herbal Practitioners (Agbo Sellers Association), has stepped up efforts to eliminate fake herbal products and unsafe traditional medicine practices across the state.

During a meeting with members of the Ifesowapo Trado-Medical Practitioners in Benin City, TMB Chairman High Chief (TDr.) Abudu Ugbesia Godwin JP urged herbal medicine practitioners to strictly focus on their areas of specialization and avoid engaging in practices beyond their training. He disclosed that a task force would soon be set up to tackle the circulation of unregistered herbal products and medicinal drinks.

The Chairman further called on association members to report unlicensed sellers, particularly those mixing hard drugs with herbal preparations, warning that such practices not only endanger lives but also tarnish the reputation of genuine practitioners. He emphasized the importance of research to ensure the safety of products and revealed ongoing collaboration with the Police to monitor quacks and unlicensed operators.

The President of the Association, Chief (TDr.) Mustapha Abere, pledged full cooperation, noting that unlicensed practitioners would be invited to regularize their operations, with sanctions to follow for non-compliance. Chief Abere also commended the Edo State Government under Governor Monday Okpebholo for creating an enabling environment for traditional medicine practitioners and praised the Chairman for his dedication to sanitizing the sector.

This initiative reflects the state’s commitment to safeguarding public health while supporting the growth and professionalism of genuine traditional medicine practitioners.
