Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has disclosed that he met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja to deliberate on the prolonged detention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement issued after the meeting, Sowore said the former president recognized the urgency of resolving Kanu’s case and emphasized that it must be addressed “decisively and justly” in the spirit of national peace and reconciliation.

Sowore noted that Dr. Jonathan expressed his intention to meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discuss the matter and explore possible steps toward a fair and lasting resolution. He described the former president’s assurance as a welcome development that adds weight to the growing national appeal for justice in Kanu’s case.

“With this, former President Jonathan joins a growing list of respected Nigerians who have called for justice and fairness in Nnamdi Kanu’s detention,” Sowore said. “This list already includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), former lawmaker Senator Shehu Sani, and many other voices across political and regional lines.”

The activist maintained that Nnamdi Kanu’s continued incarceration is unjust and contrary to democratic values, stressing that the IPOB leader’s agitation was rooted in the quest to confront ethnic marginalization and systemic inequality. He argued that similar politically charged cases involving other regional activists had been withdrawn, insisting that Kanu should not be treated differently.

“Justice must be consistent,” Sowore asserted. “If others have been freed, then Nnamdi Kanu should also be released without delay.”

He further appealed to political, cultural, and religious leaders across Nigeria to unite in demanding justice for Kanu. Sowore specifically called on South-East leaders — including Mr. Peter Obi, Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, Governor Alex Otti, Governor Francis Nwifuru, Governor Peter Mbah, Governor Hope Uzodinma, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, and Chief John Mbata of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide — to join in the national advocacy for Kanu’s freedom.

Reaffirming his dedication to peaceful civic action, Sowore said he remains committed to mobilizing Nigerians through lawful means to demand equity and justice. According to him, national unity and healing can only be achieved when legitimate grievances are addressed fairly.

“We must build a country founded on justice and mutual respect,” he stated. “I will continue to mobilize peacefully until Nnamdi Kanu is released and the voices of truth and fairness prevail.”
