The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced plans to commence a two-week warning strike beginning Monday, following the expiration of a two-week ultimatum earlier issued to the Federal Government to address its long-standing demands.

According to reports, the decision to embark on the industrial action comes after several failed attempts by the union to get the government to fulfill its commitments on issues relating to university funding, earned academic allowances, and improved working conditions.

A senior ASUU official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that unless there is a last-minute intervention, academic activities across public universities nationwide will be disrupted as lecturers down tools to press home their demands.

The union has repeatedly expressed frustration over what it describes as the government’s “failure to honor agreements” reached in previous negotiations. ASUU insists that the strike is necessary to compel authorities to take decisive action toward revitalizing Nigeria’s public university system.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government is yet to release an official statement in response to the union’s latest decision. Concerned students and parents have called on both parties to urgently resolve the impasse to prevent further setbacks in the academic calendar.
