The 22 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army (NA) has confirmed the tragic death of one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, and his wife in what is suspected to be a murder-suicide at Wawa Cantonment, Niger State.
According to a statement issued by Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, the incident occurred on 11 October 2025, leaving the entire military community in deep shock. The lifeless bodies of the soldier and his wife were discovered in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, within the cantonment.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Lance Corporal Femi, who was on duty within the cantonment, had requested permission from his superior officers to briefly attend to personal matters. Shortly after, both he and his wife were found dead in their residence.
The Nigerian Army disclosed that the remains of the deceased have been preserved as an in-depth investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
While expressing profound sorrow over the incident, the Nigerian Army extended condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends of the deceased. The Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, assured the public that the investigation will be thorough, transparent, and its findings made public.
He further emphasized the Army’s commitment to ensuring that preventive measures are put in place to avoid similar tragedies in the future, urging the public to exercise patience and cooperation as the inquiry continues.
