Senator Dino Melaye has strongly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the reported pardon of 70 convicted drug lords, describing the move as “unprecedented in world history.”

In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the former Kogi West lawmaker expressed outrage, arguing that the decision undermines the long-standing efforts of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in combating drug-related crimes in Nigeria.

Melaye stated, “Pardon granted 70 drug lords by President Tinubu is unprecedented in history. Checks have revealed that it has never happened in the history of the world. My advice to the President is to scrap the NDLEA. His action has made a beautiful nonsense of all the efforts of the agency since inception.”

The senator’s comments have sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, with many questioning the implications of such a pardon on the country’s anti-drug campaign and criminal justice system.

As of press time, there has been no official response from the Presidency or the NDLEA regarding Melaye’s statement.
