Abuja, October 14, 2025 — The World Bank has released a startling report indicating that 139 million Nigerians are now living in poverty, a dramatic rise from the 87 million reported in 2023, when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office. The report paints a grim picture of the nation’s economic reality, revealing that more than 50 million Nigerians have fallen into poverty in just two years.

The report underscores the growing disparity between government reforms and their tangible impact on citizens’ lives. Despite various policy initiatives by the administration, the number of Nigerians living under the poverty line continues to rise, cementing the country’s status as one of the most poverty-stricken nations globally.

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi expressed concern over the report, noting that the findings reflect the everyday struggles faced by ordinary Nigerians. He stressed that rather than provoking urgent national action, the revelations have instead prompted government rebuttals, leaving the plight of millions largely unaddressed.

Obi emphasized that reforms must be deliberate and centered on people-focused policies, advocating for initiatives that prioritize production over consumption, support small businesses and farmers, and invest in education and healthcare. He called for government spending to directly improve citizens’ lives, creating opportunities for sustainable growth and reducing poverty.

“No nation can truly rise when the majority of its people are trapped in poverty. With the right leadership, we can make Nigeria work for every Nigerian,” Obi said, adding that a new Nigeria is possible if strategic, inclusive policies are implemented.
