Verona, Italy — October 14, 2025: A tragic explosion has claimed the lives of three members of Italy’s Carabinieri military police during an attempted eviction in a farmhouse near Verona, northern Italy.
According to local authorities, the blast occurred as police officers and firefighters entered the building around 03:00 local time (01:00 GMT) to enforce an eviction order against three siblings — two brothers and a sister — aged between their late 50s and mid-60s. The explosion was powerful enough to be heard up to five kilometres away, reducing the farmhouse to rubble and sending shockwaves across the quiet rural area.
Officials confirmed that the three officers died instantly, while 11 other Carabinieri, three state police officers, and one firefighter sustained varying degrees of injuries. The farmhouse had reportedly been in a derelict condition with no electricity.
Authorities have arrested a man and a woman at the scene, while another man who initially fled was later located and taken into custody. All three suspects are currently receiving medical treatment under police supervision.
Preliminary investigations suggest that one of the siblings deliberately triggered a gas cylinder explosion as officers entered the property. Provincial police commander Claudio Papagno described the incident as “an act of absolute madness,” confirming that petrol bombs were also found on the premises.
Speaking to Italian news agency Ansa, Verona prosecutor Raffaele Tito stated that the explosion appeared to be a premeditated and voluntary homicide, noting that officers had reportedly heard “a whistle, likely the sound of gas cylinders being opened,” moments before the blast.
The farmhouse had been under an eviction order due to unpaid debts, according to Luca Zaia, head of the Veneto region, who expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He explained that previous eviction attempts had failed as the siblings repeatedly resisted removal.
Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi described the tragedy as “a terrible, very painful and dramatic toll,” acknowledging that mediators had been dispatched earlier in the day to negotiate with the occupants, who had barricaded themselves inside the property.
Neighbouring residents told local media that the suspects had long threatened to “blow themselves up rather than leave,” confirming the tension that had built around the case.
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto also paid tribute to the fallen officers, honouring their sacrifice “in the service of their country.” Flags at several Carabinieri stations in northern Italy have been lowered in mourning.
