The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has clarified that no inmate approved for clemency under the recent exercise of the President’s prerogative of mercy has yet been released from custody.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Attorney-General, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), explained that the process is currently at its final administrative stage, which involves a comprehensive review to ensure that all names and recommendations strictly comply with legal and procedural standards before the release instruments are signed.

According to the statement, the final step following the approval of the Council of State is the issuance of formal instruments for implementation concerning each beneficiary. This verification phase allows for a final audit to correct any potential errors before forwarding the list to the Controller-General of Corrections for execution.

Prince Fagbemi emphasized that the exercise follows due process, adding that the government remains committed to transparency, accountability, and fairness in every stage of the clemency implementation.

“There is no delay in the process; it is simply following the law to the letter to ensure that only those duly qualified benefit from the President’s mercy. The rule of law does not rush; it ensures fairness,”
the Minister stated.

He further appreciated the public’s vigilance and feedback, describing it as an important contribution to strengthening institutional integrity and ensuring good governance.

The Attorney-General reaffirmed that once all legal and procedural checks are completed, the public will be duly informed of the outcomes.
