The General Hospital, Somolu, has joined the rest of the world in commemorating the 2025 World Food Day, celebrated annually on October 16, with activities centered on promoting healthy eating and reducing food wastage.
Speaking on the theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future,” the Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Mustapha Adebola Quadri, urged Nigerians to embrace balanced nutrition as a pathway to healthy living.
According to him, “We are what we eat,” emphasizing that collective action is needed to address food shortages and wastage that continue to affect communities globally.
As part of the celebration, Mrs. Deborah Omotayo Damisa and Mrs. Atosu Esther Ekundayo, from the hospital’s Catering Department, sensitized patients—both inpatients and outpatients—on the importance of healthy diets and food sustainability.
Mrs. Damisa, while raising awareness on the prevention of food wastage, encouraged individuals to adopt small but meaningful habits that can help build a hunger-free environment. She highlighted effective strategies such as smart meal planning, proper food storage, repurposing leftovers, and composting organic waste as essential measures for food sustainability.
Similarly, Mrs. Ekundayo spoke on the benefits of eating nutritious foods, stressing that healthy dietary choices play a vital role in maintaining physical fitness and preventing lifestyle-related illnesses.
The event concluded with the distribution of food and water to patients in various wards, symbolizing the spirit of compassion and shared responsibility that the World Food Day celebration represents.
