General Hospital Ijede joined the medical community in marking World Anaesthesia Day, an annual event dedicated to recognizing the crucial role of anaesthesia and anaesthesia professionals in ensuring safe, pain-free surgery.
The 2025 celebration, themed “Anesthesiology in Health Emergencies,” brought together healthcare professionals, patients, and stakeholders to highlight the indispensable contributions of anaesthetists to modern healthcare delivery.
The event featured educational lectures, interactive demonstrations, and public awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public on how anaesthesia works, debunking common myths, and showcasing the vital role of anaesthetics in saving lives.
Dr. Rafiat Ola Obani, Head of the Anaesthetics Department at General Hospital Ijede, emphasized the significance of the day in fostering appreciation for the profession’s contributions to patient safety and surgical success.
Nurse Oluwafemi Olabisi, Assistant Director of Nursing Service, Anaesthetics Department, spoke on the centrality of anaesthesia in safe surgical care, explaining that anaesthetists ensure patients receive the highest level of care and comfort before, during, and after surgery. She described the day as a celebration of expertise, dedication, and the daily impact of anaesthesia in preserving life.
Nurse Adelakun Sakirat, also Assistant Director of Nursing Service, offered a unique historical and spiritual perspective, citing the biblical story of Adam and Eve as the earliest example of anaesthesia. She highlighted that God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep while creating Eve from his rib, drawing a symbolic parallel to the concept of pain-free procedures.
The event reinforced the essential role of anaesthetists and underscored the importance of public awareness in ensuring trust and understanding of modern surgical care.
