The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed as false and mischievous, an online report suggesting that the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was connected to an alleged attempted military coup.
In a statement released on Saturday, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, said the publication was “deliberately crafted to stir panic and sow distrust between the people and the Armed Forces.”
General Gusau explained that the decision to suspend this year’s anniversary parade had nothing to do with politics or instability. According to him, it was simply a practical adjustment to allow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attend a crucial bilateral meeting abroad, while troops across the country stay focused on ongoing military operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.
He further clarified that the recent arrest of sixteen officers currently under investigation is a normal internal procedure to uphold discipline and professionalism within the Armed Forces — not evidence of any political plot. An investigative panel, he added, has already been set up and will make its findings public in due course.
Reassuring Nigerians, the DHQ reaffirmed its unwavering loyalty to the Constitution and to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Tinubu, emphasizing that the military remains fully committed to democracy and national stability.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria is united, focused, and loyal. We urge Nigerians to ignore the lies being spread by mischief makers. Democracy is forever,” the statement concluded.
