Abuja, Nigeria — Amnesty International Nigeria has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in Southeast Nigeria, revealing that over 1,844 people were killed between 2021 and 2023, as insecurity continues to ravage communities across the region.

In a statement released on its official platform, the human rights organization said survivors live under constant fear as armed groups continue to operate with impunity.

“We live in fear every day. The gunmen are not unknown — they live among us,” one survivor told Amnesty International.

The group emphasized that the killings have reached an alarming scale and called for urgent action from regional leaders and national security agencies. Specifically, Amnesty International urged Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, alongside the Nigeria Police Force (@policeNG) and the Nigerian Army Headquarters (@HQNigerianArmy), to launch thorough investigations into every reported killing, ensure the protection of civilians, and provide adequate support for survivors.

Amnesty International noted that justice and accountability remain key to ending the cycle of violence, stressing that many of the attacks occur in rural communities where state presence is weak, leaving residents vulnerable.

The organization reiterated that the government must do more to restore peace, rebuild trust, and prioritize the rights and safety of ordinary citizens in the Southeast, warning that silence and inaction will only embolden perpetrators.

“Every life lost is one too many,” Amnesty International said, reaffirming its commitment to documenting human rights violations and amplifying the voices of victims who continue to suffer in silence.

Meanwhile, Stone Report News correspondents observed that heavy security patrols have recently increased across key cities in the Southeast, as police and military units intensify efforts to prevent further attacks and reassure anxious residents of safety.
